A Law for Life in the Land
First God liberates, and then he legislates.
NOTE: Since we’ve been talking about Deuteronomy here, I thought it would be appropriate to share this fuller explanation of the Law and its purposes. These videos are usually reserved for paid subscribers, but I wanted to share this one with all you.
God takes the Israelites out of the land of Egypt so he can give them the land he promised their ancestors. This new land of promise is an extraordinary gift that is accompanied by another gift: the Law.
The Law lays out a comprehensive vision of what life in the Land should look like. It provides a new calendar, organized to remind the people of God’s mighty saving acts; it provides new guidelines to govern the peoples’ relationship with God and with each other.
And all of it is premised on grace. The people aren’t to follow the Law to earn God’s deliverance. They are to follow the Law out of gratitude for God’s deliverance.
